Brian Kermode
My first book was called: ‘The Curse Of Emigration’, and followed soon after by: ‘The Rising Sun Of Inishowen’. I’m thrilled to say that after a period of working in the United Kingdom, I was compelled to write a comic-styled memoir about my time there. When a simple puncture left me stranded in the charming village of Diggle, in Greater Manchester, I was unaware that I was about to embark on a wonderful journey through a hidden gem at the foot of the Pennines. From meeting amazing characters to seeing spectacular scenery, it was an epic and memorable experience for me. ‘A Puncture In Saddleworth’ is now available to buy with full-colour photographs on Amazon, or you can buy direct from this website!
It’s competition time! To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of my new book: ‘The Rising Sun Of Inishowen’ just answer the following question: In what county of Ireland is Inishowen situated in?

The Rising Sun of Inishowen
“The Rising Sun of Inishowen” is a captivating tale that unfolds against the backdrop of the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, Ireland. The story revolves around the lives of two brothers, Patrick and Thomas Ryan, who vie for the affections of their neighbour’s daughter, Eimear Quinn. Set during the tumultuous years of World War 1 and the Irish War of Independence, their intertwined destinies are shaped by love, loyalty and the struggle for independence.
Growing up in Inishowen, Patrick and Thomas find themselves drawn to the vibrant and spirited Eimear. However, their lives take an unexpected turn following the untimely death of their mother. Patrick, being the elder, must shoulder the responsibilities of working on the family farm alongside his father, James, while Thomas grapples with his own aspirations and ambitions.
As Europe is plunged into chaos with the outbreak of World War 1, men from various nations, including Ireland, rally to fight for their respective causes. The Ryan brothers, like many others, are faced with the difficult decision of whether to join the Allied Forces or to support the Irish fight for Independence from British rule. Amidst divided loyalties and the turmoil of war, their bond as brothers is tested.
Against the backdrop of historical events and political upheaval, the story delves into the intricacies of the Easter Rising of 1916 and the subsequent Irish War of Independence. It weaves a captivating narrative around the lives of Patrick, Thomas, and Eimear as they navigate their personal desires, dreams and the turbulent times that surround them.
“The Rising Sun of Inishowen” combines fictional elements with historical facts, offering readers a compelling portrayal of the era’s complexities. It explores themes of love, loyalty, sacrifice and the pursuit of independence. As the brothers face profound choices that will shape their lives, the question of who will ultimately win the red-haired Eimear’s heart adds an element of intrigue and tension to the narrative.
With its richly drawn characters, evocative setting, and a blend of romance, historical events, and personal struggles, this novel promises to transport readers on a poignant journey through the tumultuous chapters of Ireland’s history and the profound impact it had on the lives of ordinary individuals.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, over half a million people emigrated from Ireland. The traditional backbone of the economy, agriculture, was in decline, leaving young people with few options.
“Most countries send out oil or iron, steel or gold, or some other crop, but Ireland has had only one export, and that is, it’s people.” —John F. Kennedy, during his Presidential visit to Ireland, June 1963
“The Curse of Emigration” is a poignant short story about a young man forced to leave his native Ireland. Emigrating to America, he finds work on construction sites around New York. Each month, he sends money back home to support his parents on their small farm in the west of Ireland. After nearly thirty years away, he is contacted by the Irish Embassy with the news that his mother has passed away. The story follows his emotional return to Ireland for her funeral.
